Chapter 1
Nothing energized Jared more than the physical exertion of running, wind tangling his hair and his feet hitting pavement. It relaxed him - or woke him up - depending on the situation. He glanced down at his side and there was Harley, running beside him as always. The dog had a totally different style than Jared, or so Jared thought. He kind of galloped, tongue hanging out and almost slapping him in the face as they ran. Jared almost laughed and then groaned when Harley veered off to chase a squirrel or perhaps something else; it wasn’t that he wanted to kill it. Rather, he just wanted to play. That damn dog loved any animal smaller than him and wanted to mother it. “Harley!” Jared called out as he veered off his own route to follow his dog.
“No treats when we get home if you keep this up, fur face!” he called out, speeding up a bit to try to catch his dog. Jared was lost in his own mind and didn’t even notice a large rock in his way; he was too focused on the dog. He caught his foot and went down, long limbs sprawling everywhere. He narrowly missed landing fully in a huge puddle but his lower half unfortunately did end up in the muddy water. Jared sat up slightly, annoyed at being wet and annoyed at Harley for being so...well, Harley. He looked up to find Harley looking at him sheepishly. “No treats,” Jared said firmly before getting up and trying to wipe off some of the water running down his legs.
“Jesus Harley, I don’t understand why you have to…” Jared started to say, but stopped speaking when he heard it: a voice. He stood up straight and tilted his head as he tried to listen. His momma always said he was like a puppy dog, and right then as his ears practically stood up, it was cold hard proof that he was glad she wasn’t around to witness. Someone was singing, and the voice was amazing. So much so that Jared actually wanted - no, needed - to know where it was coming from. He started walking in the direction of the sound, with Harley huffing and following suit slightly behind Jared, not sure where they were going or if Jared was still mad at him.
The tall man rounded a corner, and there on a bench in an older, less-used part of the park was the source of the sound, singing and playing an old guitar. Jared didn’t recognize him, but he was…beautiful. Jared didn’t normally call guys beautiful but this one deserved it. His skin was pale, but like a cup of tea when it had way too much milk, his skin had just a touch of warmth. The singer had messy, dirty blond - almost brown but not quite - hair, a few blonde tufts here and there like it had been streaked but was growing out. Jared couldn’t see his eyes since they were closed as he sang, but his gold-dusted lashes fanned out over lightly freckled cheek. Fucking hell he’s hot, Jared thought to himself. The singer obviously heard Jared approach and stopped, looking up at him. That was it; Jared was done for. With those lashes raised, deep moss green eyes were revealed and the most sinfully full lips were smirking at him.
“Can I help you?” Jensen asked as he looked at Jared. It was obvious he was eyefucking him, inch by well-built inch. It didn’t bother Jared much…he was used to it. He’d worked hard on his body and he actually enjoyed it when others appreciated it. Jared was as sculpted as a six foot four guy could be without looking like he belonged in a wresting ring or something. He was built and defined but still lean, always lightly tanned, with golden brown hair hanging messily just above his shoulders and hazel eyes tilted slightly that more than once had been referred to as cat eyes…he still wasn’t sure if he appreciated that or not, but the singer seemed to like what he saw.
Once he realized the man asked him a question, Jared cleared his throat and smiled sheepishly. “Um hi, I didn’t mean to disturb you I just…I heard you singing and I had to find out who it was. You have a great voice,” Jared said, hoping he didn’t sound as lame out loud as he did in his head.
Jensen stood and slung his guitar onto his back, still smiling at Jared. “It’s okay, thanks. I come here pretty much everyday, to clear my head. I like this spot and it usually doesn't get many visitors, like the rest of the park does.” He said, obviously amused by the dripping wet man, as he walked closer to Jared.
“Oh. Well maybe I should come by more often, then.” Maybe a little more overt than Jared would have liked to claim he was, but everyone who knew him was well aware that he was about as subtle as a gunshot.
“Right,” Jensen said with a small smile. He was teasing Jared now, but that was okay. Jared seemed like someone who could keep up. “I gotta’ get going, though. Besides. What is it they say about talkin’ to strangers and all that?”
“But see, we’re not strangers.” Jared replied quickly as he gave Jensen his most adorable grin, the same one he used to use when his mother or a teacher would try to scold him for mischievous behaviour.
Jensen tilted his head and smiled. “We aren’t, huh?” He couldn’t help being curious. “‘Cause you seem pretty strange to me. You sure you didn’t dream it?”
Jared shook his head, glancing at the ground once before meeting eyes with the other man. “Maybe.”
The singer laughed and fought against the red heat that he felt creeping up on his face. “Ah I see…well I guess you’re right, we have met…either by you stalking, or in your dreams.” If his mother was around, she’d kick his ass for poking fun of a stranger, but Jared was right. This man certainly didn’t feel like one.
“I really do have to go, though,” Jensen said, taking his phone out of his pocket to check the time. Jared’s eyes widened in surprise, and right as Jensen turned to head off towards the path, he couldn’t help himself.
Somehow, his oversized paw landed on Jensen’s hand, just to keep him there for a second longer. He couldn’t tell whether or not he’d already put off Jensen with his overbearing nature, but he wasn’t about to let him go without knowing for sure. “When will I see you again?” the tall man asked, voice as earnest as a boy scout.
Jensen seemed a bit flustered as he turned around, glancing at Jared’s hand on his. Then, after a second of deliberation, he smiled slightly and nodded, so as not to seem like he was as unsure about Jared as he was. “I told you. I’m here every day.” He gave Jared a full blown grin and then pulled his hand away and headed down an overgrown path, soon out of Jared’s sight.
Jared fell onto the bench and sighed. “Harley…I think I’m in love.’ The dog looked at his master and seemed to shake his head before letting out a loud huff. He had heard that one before.
